The last report I read indicated the canard departed the aircraft after
turbulence-induced flutter of an elevator. Large chunks of F22 were found
still attached to the lift tabs, So the attachment system worked. Not so with the Airbus 300 that crashed in New York. Some theories point
to rudder flutter, which removed the vertical fin at the attach points. There isn't a structure out there that can withstand fully divergent
flutter of a control surface.
Ah Yep! Fully divergent flutter would probably turn a rock into gravel or sand.
