J D out at Infinity advised me to use the peel ply method and don’t remove it until you are ready to bond to it. I’ve been doing that since day one.
One thing I do is pull up a corner and mark it with a red sharpie so I don’t forget that it’s still there.
 
The second best thing I learned (via Wayne Hicks) was the sandblasting technique of surface prep. (See link)
Believe it or not, this gives the area a uniform surface to bond to, not just the peaks but the valleys too.
I also eliminates damage to the fibers that ordinarily would come in contact with a sanding block.
