I wish one or more of you would post things you like about OSH Flyin.

I enjoyed the Military fly bys, HBC is working, I enjoyed touring the BIG planes, the food is not gourmet but no one would by it anyway, some very interesting concept planes. We need the big crowds because out of that we get a few new pilots each year and without pilots we don’t have a support system. Etc etc Off my rant. Long-EZ N36EJ my own little F16. Boeing/Fed-x/Ford/other big boyz pay to display their offerings in front of 500,000 people. As to war-birds, I kinda agree. But seeing a F4U up close is kinda neat, and they do draw a crowd. Ignoring the 'commercial' aspect of Airventure, especially the eye glass cleaners and magic fingers massage chair vendors, there's a lot to offer for the builders/experimenters. Bill K volunteers for the composite workshop, it's filled to capacity more than half of the sessions. I volunteer at the Cozy-3 build in Aeroplane Workshop, along with the rest of "Team Epoxy", Chrissi, Randi, Bob, George, and often a few from the audience. We laid up both spar caps and both wing skins on one wing this year. Ever try to skin a wing using medium hardener in 85* heat while answering the inevitable "can I ask a small question"? Hand layups are 'old tech', but we do draw a modest crowd. If "Team Epoxy" didn't volunteer, RV types would be flying around with butt ugly modified cowlings. Yes, that's one of the "can I ask a small question" we *often* answer ;) Do you know Portuguese? I don't either, but have had multiple visitors to our workshop from Brazil. The International Tent has volunteer translators that will go to a workshop/venue. I found that out on departure, from a Russian couple. What timing :-/ Gordon: Know where you're coming from, suspect many think the same. But if we don't volunteer to share our collective knowledge with the few experimenters that attend, we're shooting ourselves in the proverbial foot. IMHO, of course :) Rick

Good points. Personally, I’d like to see anything military banned from the event. It’s be nice to skip the United Airlines and UPS airplanes dominating Boeing as well. Those guys can all go to Paris.

Maybe we should all just start landing in Rockville again. Izzy

Folks: While relaxing in our B&B room in Florence prior to going out to dinner, I ran across a Barnstormers advertisement by David Hanson of Warren, Ohio, for composite canard build / assistance services (he has, he claims, 17 years of "experiance"). I felt ethically obligated to issue a warning. I know of at least two aircraft that Mr. Hanson has built/refurbished that have had major issues with them. One is his personal SQ2K, which I examined personally in Chino, CA in February. Just to be open, here's the list of issues I found with the SQ2K N440DH, NOT in severity order:
Now, I'll state outright that NO plane is perfect - EVERY plane, including my own, will have some issues with it that some A&P's might find to be issues to be addressed at some point. But there are at least 3 -5 items listed above that indicate to me that Mr. Hanson does not understand the required safety aspects of these aircraft, or worse, that he does and doesn't care. I do not know which of these is the case, but it doesn't matter for the people that use his services - either way, there are safety related problems. Mr. Hanson has a "signature" paint scheme that he uses on any plane he's had a hand in refinishing - it makes it relatively easy to recognize at least that part of his work. For anyone looking for composite builder assistance, part purchase, or modification help, Caveat Emptor.

Osh$, has been going commercial for a long time. The reason I quit doing the composites workshop and coming to Osh to volunteer. The entire”AirVenture” theme will be a failure as soon as the homebuilder core quit volunteering at Osh. It’s now 100% on the local chapters to keep the original EAA movement alive. Ask yourself, if the EAA did not have real experimental aircraft enthusiast around the country, would our so called builders convention in Osh survive? Would the State of WI pony up the money to support the state’s largest event? I know someone in Osh corporate management reads these posting on our user group, I wonder if they will wake up to the fact that they have allowed our annual experimental convention has been highjacked by money, like our political system.

Hi Izzy- All you say is correct and certainly hope shoot gets prominent exposure.?? The really disappointing point is, though, that the less-than-2-dozen includes ALL experimentals from Pientenpols to Fly Babys to Canards to RVs. Ken

The future for our group is the established events like Columbia, Rough Rover, Kannab, Bahamas etc. The F-35.6 is nice but not 2,345 pictures worth of nice. Charlie got his Viggen in the list at least. There were a couple other so. That said, there was a pretty significant photo shoot of all the Canards and we’re hoping they held back on publishing those because they want to use them in the magazine. One can hope. Izzy

EAA photo miscues
Well, N4ZZ is safely back in the hangar after it's 42nd O$hko$h. I've been cleaning up the past week's email (I give myself the week off from email) for the last 2 hours. EAA sent out a link to an official photo archive on Flickr that their staff took which ran 28 pages and nearly 2800 photos. On a hunch I quickly scanned the first 900 or so. Discounting a few that were in afternoon or evening airshows, EAA accidentally let almost 2 dozen pictures of actual ordinary 'rank-and-file' experimental airplanes leak into the group. Someone must have really screwed up to let THAT many in.
Picture from campground yesterday will be an enduring memory of this years O$H. Bet it didn't look like that near the museum or the 'Aviator's Club'. Ken
