Chrissy and Randy, who's that?
Jambalaya has the Y in it, no Y's in Chrissi or Randi =)
So glad you enjoyed the Jambalaya so much, very concerned about your health leaving it out overnight outside a porta-potty (cringing actually).
Just goes to show that the right amount of Cajun seasoning can kill anything that ails you =)
Credit for the Jambalaya should go to Bob Tilley, he was the original owner of the big cast iron rig it was fixed in and he brought the recipe back from Baton Rouge where he lived and worked a number of years, he studied his jambalaya craft under a master. We bought the cooking rig from him and tweaked the recipe (hid the Tony Chachere's seasoning from Bob's heavy hand) and collaborated with Bob. Thank you Elizabeth for assistance with the local Kroger's affiliate market for the excellent ingredients as well though we did have to haul the nearly 30 lbs of andoille sausage from St Louis because the Osh locals are into brats and that would have been unthinkable.
We were sort of gobsmacked when we asked the crowd i they preferred the jambalaya or the spaghetti. Was the spaghetti that bad or just getting old? I can eat jambalaya maybe twice a year, I do love it but I have limits. Spaghetti on the other hand is Wednesday night, every Wednesday night. Never tire of it.
We will probably do the jambalaya jam again next year, an tweaked version of this year's.
Thank you for the feedback, glad you enjoyed it that much!

Re: Help getting info on Werner Varieze

Thanks for the help Ron and Tom. I'm asking because I've been contacted by a Pilot in Brazil who say's the airplane is down there and he wants to know if he should buy it. The mystery is what happened to it between Paul's ownership and it getting to Brazil, if it's actually Pauls airplane that's down there. RAFE gets contacted regularly from people looking for advice on acquitting an EZ. We're not brokering anything at all. That's not our goal. I often direct them to those I know that can help them, but occasionally one piques my interest. Unlike your typical spam -can prepurchase research I tell people looking at an EZ that this is often more like detective work. The first question to ask is "who built it". Few of these are built in a vacuum. Someone knows someone who can help vet the machine. Anyone heard of D. Byerly in Sandy UT? I recognize the name of the last A&P to sign off the last CI in the logbook but the trial ends there .. with no dots to connect to Brazil. Ryszard

Re: EZ painting
ARGOLDMAN@...
Rolling and tipping seems to be a great, clean and effective solution. It is used on the topsides (part above the water) on large yachts and from what I have seen equals spray-on is less expensive (less material) cleaner (no paint booth necessary) and requires only a special type of roller (not home depot kind) and a good quality brush. The only problem, for me, is that I am a solo builder and to get best effect you need another person to roll or tip, with the tipping happening very shortly after the roll on. It is done in small segments, just moving along the piece until done.
I am seriously considering just rolling on primer since it is sanded after application. Still pondering how i can do the roll and tip although that is not out of the question. (I do have two arms)

Definitely something to consider. It looks to me like a beginner might get a nicer finish with "rolling and tipping" vs. spraying.

nosedragger48154
OMG. Is Tim correct on this one! Best story I have got is with my buddy Chris Richards, this goes back a few years ago, He had brought out his newly refinished I believe 1968 Firebird, it was beautiful! I said to Chris, WHO did the paint job? Chris looked at me with a really weird look and said “who cares, I did the body work”! Well I never forgot that and when I started the body work on my VariEze I began to realize just exactly what Chris had meant by his comment. When I was about finished with the body work and putting the plane in primer, I ran into Chris at the airport one day and told him I owed him an apology! Another weird look and he said “for what”? I said “do you remember when…..”? He said “yeah”, and then I said “well I know now just exactly what you meant that day and I have learned a very valuable lesson”. Being Chris he looked me square in the eye and said that there was no apology necessary with a big smile on his face. Moral to the story, the more experience you get in building these planes or anything for that matter the greater your appreciation for the effort put out when you see it!

You should guide coat it and block sand after prime, if you do you'll find plenty of new flaws you didn't know about. Painting is the easy part, its the work you put in beforehand that makes the paint job. Tim Andres

Also at West Marine is their own brand "SeaGlossPro". This is what I
used on my plane. It is cheaper than the Pettit brand, and the
interesting thing is that is IDENTICAL to the Pettit paint! The
back of the label is identical word for word to the back label of
the Pettit, including the Pettit name, contact info and address!

As has been said, VERY easy to apply with a roller, and just be sure to go over it lightly with a fine brush to remove the bubbles. Takes a long time to set completely which, I guess, is how it gets it's high gloss, smooth finish. Harley Dixon Long EZ N28EZ

Re: EZ painting

Pettit is popular with the yachting set. West Marine (currently advertising price matching) stocks (in warehouse) pretty much their complete line as do other vendors. Here is a link to a color chart including their two new shades of white. (No vendor recommendations- just the first chart I found. Their new product "Wet Edge" looks interesting. I may have to try that paint on a chunk of cut up boat and leave it out in the sun... I did tip and roll (backwards name!) on a 36' mast, learned achieving an even coat (meaning thickness) is important. A key to that is that to "paint back to the wet" as opposed to refilling the roller and continuing on from where you left off. This gets you back to your wet edge with less paint on the roller, without applying too much paint in one area. Smoothing out too much paint takes time you won't have, your edges get dry etc. Pettit offers both Brushing and Spraying thinners. Please note that they do recommend cleaning "fiberglass" with their "Brushing Thinner". I would want to test those thinners on my materials before applying it as a cleaning de-greaser or thinning agent. To build your skill and confidence, paint everything you own that needs painting and maybe try some large area piece like a car hood. Then practice "corrections" on that item. You should get comfortable with the method in a couple hours. Very Best Regards, Paul Finishing a long stalled long project

Re: COZY: Bottom Fuselage Paint

I just went through the pain of painting my plane for the second time. The first time the paint job really sucked. Here are the things that I learned and did. This is not the only way to do things, this is just my experience. The first key is prepping the surface. Use a flashlight in low light at a really low angle, and all those little imperfections will just pop out. Bought a good pressure pot paint gun. I have used several gravity feed guns, but painting upside down under the wings and fuselage really causes these to have issues. The first pressure pot gun I bought from Harbor Freight was piece of junk. Leaked from every connection. After several frustrating hours, I tossed it in the garbage, don't waste your money. (This was part of the first paint job being horrible) The one I purchased and recommend is: A good compressor is a must. I then put a pressure regulator on the output of the compressor. This may not be necessary, because the gun itself has an air output limiter, but I had it so I threw that on. I then had to learn technique and tune the setup. I found a video online that talked about practicing with water based acrylic paint from the craft store. $10 a gallon, and water based. I bought some of that and added some water to thin it and got a bunch of cardboard to practice on. This worked out great, highly recommend this for anyone trying to learn to paint. Cheap, no noxious fumes, completely safe, and clean up with water. I spent over an hour spraying with different pressures and paint flow. I finally settled on 15psi in the paint pot, and 30 psi from the compressor. The two controls on the gun had wide open air output and almost wide open paint output. Used PPG paint and mixed according to their instructions. The paint job turned out great. I still had a few dips and a sag, but hey, I'm an amateur. With a little light sanding and some wet sanding a a few places, it will look fantastic. This worked for me... your mileage may vary. Jack Prock

Phil, I have a car paint store nearby that gives lessons. Usually local high schools have weekend or evening 6 week classes for things like that. With practice you cam shoot paint well. All the car paint systems give ratios of reducer, hardener, etc online and the proper gun and pressure or the store can tell you.
