I built my Longez over a 30 year period! It was untouched for about 15 years. I finished after retiring and have put 500 hours on it since completing it in 2014.

Another one bites the dust...
Erlend Moen <erlend@...>
I'm sorry to have to say that I have come to the conclusion that I will stop my building project for an indefinite time. There are several reasons for this, where the main reason is that due to family health problems I need to change my priorities. Family comes first. I have invested 1000+ hours in the project so far (up to ch 20 + ch 16 in progress), and have most all of the bits and pieces in stock except for the intrumentation and engine. I will store the project as it is and see if I can continue the mission in some years, or I will sell it if someone is interested. This is located in Norway, the market for these types of projects is rather limited. It has been an interesting journey and I have met so many nice and helpful people in this community! Yeah - ADS-B and Xponder antenna GP's are tiny - 5 - 6" diameter, and can live just about anywhere. But the GP for a 121.5 MHz ELT is large and a PITA. The dual dipole scheme on the seatback bulkhead is a fairly elegant solution.

Steve Rothert wrote: I am helping a Cozy guy install a Transponder, ADSB and ELT. Proposed locations for the Transponder antenna and ADSB antenna have been identified. What have other canard drivers done for a ground plane for the ELT? So you got a few answers for a ground plane for the Xponder and ADSB antenna, but not much for the ELT. I'll first tell you what NOT to do, which is what I did on my plane (COZY MKIV). I decided that I needed to use the whip antenna that came with the Artex ELT 345 that I bought, and that I needed to create a ground plane for it to be "legal". I painted the whole floor of the plane, both aft of the seatback bulkhead to the rear seat bulkhead supports, and forward of the SB Bulkhead, up to the front seat supports, with copper paint (EXPENSIVE!!!), and used conductive paint to tie the front and back together through holes in the seatback at the bottom. I then mounted a copper bracket to the floor and attached the whip antenna to that. I painted the floor with paint to protect the copper paint. I've tested this using the satellite testing capability, and it works - the satellites receive the 406 MHz signal (at least when the plane is right side up, with me either in it or out of it). But all that is a crapload of work and not worth it. After a few long discussions on the COZY mailing list regarding ELT antennae in composite aircraft, the idea of dual dipoles was brought up (I think by Phillip Johnson, to give credit where it's due, IIRC). So when a customer asked me to install a 406 MHz ELT for him (the same Artex ELT345), I decided to try that scheme. Here's what it looks like on the back of the seatback bulkhead of his Long-EZ: That's a brick of 99% pure heroin on the top of the seatback next to the fire extinguisher, in case you're interested. These planes are extremely cost effective... (that's a joke, son). You can see the long legs of the dipole copper tape running up to the top of the headrest, and then down to the lower left corner of the seatback. You can see the short legs of the dipole off to the right of the center point, all partially covered by the plastic container. I used this document from RST Engineering: to determine the leg lengths, using the formula shown:
So the long lengths, for 121.5 MHz, I set to 21.2", and for 406 MHz, I set to 6.34". While we haven't yet tested it in communication with the satellites, it worked fine broadcasting on 121.5 MHz. This whole process took maybe 4 - 6 hours to install, rather than the days I spent on my plane. Hope this helps.

ELT Antenna Ground Plane again
Del Schier
Too bad we have to put antennas on our airplanes designed for metal airplanes!
The simple answer is to cover your airplane with aluminum and follow the installation instructions 😊
A not very cost effective solution, that would work well, is to buy a second ELT antenna and put them together with a T connector.
I forwarded the email from Andrew here as he used the cheap neat and simple solution. Just a piece of wire 1/4 wavelength long at => 90 deg from the base of the antenna. Two wires if you have a dual band ELT those wires should be spread out a little from each other.
As long as you provide "the other half of the antenna" you should get a good impedance match and most of the power will be radiated into space. How you orient the antenna and wires should not be very important as you may crash sideways or up-side-down.
If you are in doubt of if it will work you can tape it in the airplane and measure the SWR on both frequencies. A $70 NanoVNA works well for this.

Ok so I once again decided to listen to you guys.... I’m not using the fuel lines as my ground plane.
Del did help me come up with a solution. I learned from him that We don’t necessarily need to make a ground plane for the approved antenna but instead can use it the antenna as part of a dipole antenna. I only had to install two wires as the other “half” of the dipole. One is 7.3” long and the other is 24.3” (for the 406 and 121.5 mhz). The antenna is horizontal in the strake baggage area, and Del says it will work fine in this configuration. Thanks for keeping me on a good path.

Re: ELT Ground Plane???
Tim Andres
A 6” aluminum disk mounted to the floor is fine, let the antenna stick out the bottom at least partially. Its not suppose to matter but Ive seen it make a difference. On my Cozy, the transponder was mounted up in the nose, the ADSB was just forward of the MLG bulkheads under the rear seat. Both worked fine. Tim Andres

Columbia, CA Fly-In - 6/4 - 6/6
Marc J. Zeitlin
Folks: For those of you who aren't on Tim Fisher's mailing list for some reason, the "Canards West" fly-in in Columbia, CA (O22) will be happening in a slightly modified manner this year. The airport and campgrounds are open, but the clubhouse at the campgrounds are not. So we'll be having a pizza dinner at a personal hangar on Friday night, then a fly-out for a pancake breakfast in Placerville (KPVF) on Saturday morning. After hanging out at the planes the rest of the day Saturday, we'll be having dinner at El Jardin on Saturday night. No presentations this year - just informal discussions. See: for more info, and see the "dinner" page to tell Tim what you want for dinner on Saturday. See you there!

convenient.

road and not on our neighbors campsites.

alcohol so feel free to BYOB or pass a
hat and we will make sure there is a run
to Walmart for ICE COLD BEER.
There will be coolers full of ice.
6. =No animals!=
,we LOVE animals, just not when & where we are preparing and serving food.
7. If you RSVP in the 10 days before Airventure you
will probably not receive an
acknowledgement from us we're either on the road
or already there and EAA WiFi is spotty.
8. Count on mosquitoes! Spray yourself.
You will
need your chair and maybe a blanket for the movie next door, It is too early
for the schedule to know what the movie will be Tuesday night at the Fly In
Theater but it is usually good.
Count on
mosquitoes! Spray yourself.

stick around and socialize!
