COZY: Engine max rpm
More info: Sorry, 2000 rpm. Not 2700. Will not run past 2000 rpm at full throttle. Just running sitting on the ground. I’ve not flown or taxied yet. Just getting warm here. Cozy MKIV, IO-540D4A5, all

Engine max rpm
I’ve been going through the gradual break-in beginning at low rpm until hot temps then running up gradually to the upper rpm range. The last time I ran my engine it would max out at 2700 rpm. I have t

Del, A pilot buddy let me borrow his $12 rice cooker to boil water next to the engine. Boiling water in the cooker was a good constant temp. I dipped each bayonet probe in the water to check the temp

Kent, my 540 Lycoming break-in manual let’s you go to 400 but in the beginning it’s about 2 minutes from 350. Del - the attached Mattituck schedule is good. My A&P working with me says run it up at 50

Hey Ken, times two for both types - 2 stroke, 4 stroke. But I think we get your drift. :) Greg Norman

Buly - I recognize the factory baffles between but you needed to add those blue wraps as well? You must have some great pressure to push through those small gaps. Greg Norman

Del, Some good answers there but maybe some skimmed over the first part. You said the engine is newly rebuilt. If it’s still going through the break in stage first 100 hours it’s going to run hot. Tho

Old video on air flow
Anyone remember an old black and white classroom movie on airflow with a guy in a laboratory using a balance beam device and a small vertical fan? I think NACA made it. The guy clamped all things like

One serious radius
I've seen a lot of winglets on commercial jets these days but I don't think I've see the transition radius so huge like this one. Greg Norman N540GN

Single oil cooler worked great today with a reverse scoop.
Hi Del, that's great news. Less plumbing and less strain on your oil pump is good. You might be able to get away with a small lip or less angle on the scoop for even more cooling. Greg Norman

Repairing the outer (kevlar?) surface of a cowl
Hi Raymond, Kevlar is a good material if you need something to flex instead of break. What it's doing is flexing and your micro/epoxy and paint is rigid. The flex could be from expansion and contracti

Raptor down
Heavy plane, nose and main gear unable to withstand the landing. Looks like drybead design mains? I remember when Jack Morrison landed in a bean field with his 540 powered E-racer. Broke only the nose

Redrive failure? Sounds like a common problem. Wasn't that the same issue that put the plane (non-canard) into the building at RR? Greg

COZY: Strong pitch trim jamming
I wire brushed the threaded rod even though it doesn't need it, chased it with a thread die. Tried light oil. No joy. Best I get to keep it from racheting is dialed up to 14. Likely will not need full
