Dynon support

Jim Evans

I have a Dynon D10 and D100.  My aircraft has been down for the past three years and am bringing it back on line in a few weeks.  I will need to update these units but I am wondering if they are supported any longer.  On their website, they do not sell them any longer and the updates appear old.  Should I consider abandoning them?  Anyone still using them?  I really don't want to start all over with another system.

I have a D180 that has run strong for the past 12 years.  There are no new updates for it either but I suspect there are no updates because there are no significant bugs in the firmware.  If they still work, Fly them!

Dynon has been nothing but AWESOME supporting my legacy units.

There's probably just no update needed - I don't think I'd updated my D10A EFIS or EMS-D120 in many years.

That said, both of these (the D10A and the EMS) will be for sale in the near future - I've upgraded to a Skyview system. The D10A is plug-and-play with the D10, I believe, and was almost working perfectly (reboot every so often for no reason whatsoever - a problem in IFR, not a problem in VFR conditions). I'd let it go really cheap, and Dynon still supports them and fixes them if something goes wrong, as they're the units that are STC'd for TC'd aircraft.

Hi Tom,

I’m in the same boat and have had to update and exchange equipment.  Dynon’s support has been exceptional in every way.  They are swamped and working from their homes but always return their calls in a timely manner and have always been more than fair exchanging, repairing and updating old gear.  I’ve have good experiences with GRT and Garmin as well but personally think Dynon is a cut above.

Jim,  Like someone else said if they are working keep using them.  A few years ago I put in a EMS D10  and last year I put in an EFIS D10. I did the firmware update with a USB to RS232 serial interface and the Dynon updater download, which should still be on their website.  I am very happy with the performance and features of both of them but it was quite a project to install them, especially the EMS; and to program them and set them up properly.

Thanks, y'all for the many responses.  Dynon called back yesterday afternoon.  The last update was in 2016 and they told me the same, if they are still working, continue using them if I'd like.  I didn't ask anything about upgrading them of if they offer any exchange costs.  Good news, looks like I can continue using them til they quit.  I really appreciate all the kind responses and good info.

Love Dynon stuff but I have say one issue we have with them is their lack of support for non-profits. Every year at OSH and SunnFun I talk to them and they’re always “Sounds great, would love to help. Get ahold of us after the show..”. When we do try to contact them we get little to no response.  They are the hardest company in the world to get on the phone. RAFE has had such great support from many companies but can’t seem to get Dynon to acknowledge us.

If you look at the Sponsors on the RAFE website you’ll see we do not seek free stuff from anybody we can. We have a connection and working relationship with our Sponsors and try to give back. We appreciate greatly all the help we get. As many Rutan designs out there flying Dynon stuff you’d think they‘d see an opportunity for a good relationship. Aircraft Spruce helps us and smaller companies like B&C get it.

I’m pretty down on Dynon support right now. My D10A developed flaws on it’s screen and Dynon wants $450 to just replace the screen. If I’m gonna spend that kinda money on an EFIS, I would replace the D10A with a GRT.

This is the sad fact of fixing things. To some extent we're in a "throw away" environment.

Say a tech will spend at least an hour testing and repairing an item. That hour could cost over $100. Don't know what Dynon charges.

Now, I have a 10 inch RCA tablet. Not top of the line, but the damn thing cost me $79. Just don't ever try to get repairs. Probably cost more than a new tablet. Warranty period is also important.

Don't know anything about the screen on the Dynon. Might cost them $20, might cost them $300. Might be a good question to ask before purchasing.

Some years ago I wanted to inquire about repairs to a Panasonic printer. They would not allow me to talk to a tech without a credit card number. Disgusted, I called several vendors. Best response was from Brother. They talked to me, without credit card #, and gave me prices for toner and drum replacement, which was half of anyone else's. I now use Brother printers.

General rule of thumb, Ask about availability and cost of repairs and parts before making a purchase. If a vendor will not discuss that, beware, shop elsewhere. It's too late after you've purchased.

Note, this is not saying anything specifically about Dynon, I've read things about them, both good and bad. I personally have no dog in this race.

I had the same experience with Dynon. I RMA’d a Skyview screen for sticky buttons and they wanted $450 before they would even send the RMA paperwork. I gave them an Amex and they sent the papwerwork.

The price didn’t make me happy, but the unit came back fixed and in the timeframe they promised. So the reliability is there which might be worth the extra money.

But frankly, Gamin does the same thing and about the same amount as do other Avionics people. So maybe we just have to accept it.

Neil,
I was thinking someone in our group (or the Velocity group) repaired/ replaced their Dynon screen themselves. The photos I saw seemed pretty simple and I don’t think the screen cost him much.
