Uninsurable at Any Cost.....

Andrew Anunson

Got bad news....

Falcon could not find liability insurance for my 2022 Cozy MKIV through any of the underwriters.
Avemco will not write a policy that includes bodily injury (a requirement in Virginia).

I have 160TT, and 18 hours in my Cozy.  I have PPL, no IFR.
I have nothing bad on my record... no DUI, no accidents, recent BFR, recent Physical, 49 years old.
My Cozy has a Lycoming, the plans 180HP.

Jim at Falcon told me the underwriters are now wanting a minimum of 500TT for a Cozy, but for me to try again if I get 250TT and earn my IFR and have at least 50 hours in make and model.

SO.... I'll have to choose between flying out of compliance or decide to hangar the Cozy out of state (Lucky for me, I can forget Virginia and keep it in Eastern KY).

Andrew, if I'm not mistaken,  Virginia only requires 100k liability minimum.

Andrew,  I stand corrected.  This is what I carry through Avemco, minimums.

Perhaps I'm mistaken. Michelle and I were at Oshkosh and went to insurance talks. Only Avemco was reasonable. They will cover us for liability. My understanding is that liability includes bodily injury. What you said Andrew is total news to us. We don't want hull insurance. We just want liability and, again, our understanding is that it includes bodily injury. Perhaps we have to revisit Avemco.

BTW, I know Falcon is EAA's official insurance but IMHO, they are worthless. I called them and explained our build and situation. In so many words (I'm paraphrasing) the guy said, Age doesn't matter. You may be crazy enough to build your own plane but we aren't crazy enough to insure it. He was rude and told me no one will insure you. This was before we went to Oshkosh. For the life of me I can't understand why they are EAA's official insurance agency. It seems they are only good for factory built airplanes.

Not sure we can get on the call tonight. Heading out to camping. Perhaps we can call in on the way.

Letters to EAA HQ should be written.  I’ve had same experience with Falcon.  They are an embarrassment to EAA when they treat builder like this.

I may be wrong but I think that to write insurance in Virginia or almost any state a company must provide the minimum coverage required by that state.

OK... so Avemco's rep told me on the phone that their liability doesn't meet Virginia's bodily injury requirement, but the website states their liability does include bodily injury.  Perhaps its poor communication over the phone.

I will fill out their online application and see if I can make some progress with them.

Thanks for mentioning Avemco includes bodily injury!!

Jim Stewart with Falcon wasn't necessarily "rude" with me.... but he wasn't helpful.  I asked how Virginia would react to all of Falcon's underwriters denying coverage, he said "Well they won't care, they didn't make you build a plane that you can't get insurance on."  It must be frustrating turning down lots of potential customers.

He did recommend Avemco... which was nice of him to do.  I do appreciate his help.

Thanks,
Andrew Anunson

I have liability coverage only on my Long-EZ. The policy was written by Ladd Gardner Ins.  Addison, TX  972-250-0400.

I've been with them for many years and the price has run about $475/year.  I had a claim a few years ago and they handled it seamlessly.  It was like it never happened.  I am satisfied with them!  You might be too.
