COZY: Inboard Aileron Hinge Attachment, Right Wing

Phil Kriley

I’d clamp it between to straight, flat pieces of wood and apply heat, then let it cool completely.  Repeat if needed.

Why not try both.  Give heat a try.  I’m skeptical it would work.  I have had mismatches like this throughout the project and i have typically had to repair.  That said, I don’t see a repair being that hard in this space.  Cut out the depression, lay a flat edge in the pocket as a base for a new layup, grind down the appropriate layers per standard repair from the outside, and layup new lip.  Could throw an extra layer of bid on the inside as added reinforcement for the repair (spanning the length of the hinge.  My 2 cents…

The attached picture is looking forward (down in the photo because the wing is held on its leading edge) on the right wing at the location of the inboard aileron hinge attachment. I have a straight edge held against the inside of the upper surface. As you can see, there is a depression on the wing upper surface resulting in a 0.10” gap which prevents me from attaching the hinge flush against the upper surface. I could force it, but it would bind the hinge.

I have 2 options:

  1. Sand it flat and repair it
  2. Minor heat locally to remove the depression

#2 is easier and I would like to do that.

Thoughts/Comments?

All,

The January 2023 Canard Calendar is available on the http://canardowners.com web site.  If you are not a member of COBA, you will have to wait a couple of days to set access to public.
