COZY: Landing light first flight test next experiment

I will swap out the LEDs for the spots, balance out my panel lighting and follow Klaus’s recommendation to fly before sunrise. In the early morning I can just sit at the big town airport until sunrise if the spot LEDs are not significantly better. I may wake up a few airpark neighbors, they have told me I have the loudest airplane at the airpark.

Del,

Since the Cozy is wider than the LEZ/VEZ (which the Landing Light was designed for), why would you not space it out wider from the plans location?  I have changed the landing light further outboard on 2 LEZ's and it works great. Two things change; One is, the actuation is now electric instead of manual since the offset is too great for the manual system to accommodate and the 2nd thing is door that carries the bulb is now composite so it can fit the curve of the fuselage.
My own LEZ has the original position and it is adequate for the task but it could be better.  I plan to change mine to in front of the Nose gear and use electric actuation.
I am guessing you also have a 2 piece door at the tire well.  That would definitely spoil the light beam.

Hi all,

I would advise that, if you are building, and haven’t done you landing light install, I wouldn’t do the plan’s flip down behind the nose gear. I am disappointed with my plans LED upgrade. Since my flight test, I again searched the web for anything, regardless of price, that has a significantly higher power input rating (lumen ratings are bogus), that might physically fit and there is nothing.

Today, out of curiosity, I measured the power input of my Tesla LED headlights. One light, high or low beam, consumes 28 Watts; not much more than the 24 W of the Cozy LEDs. The Tesla lights are very bright, effectively illuminating at least 1000’ down the road. But, of course, there are two of them and they probably have better focusing and LED efficiency.  They also don’t have a shadow from the gear leg; my nose gear has about 3” fairing air seal on it.

I had forgotten which version of the eBay lights I had installed: spot or flood. I had purchased both and today found the spots still in the box. I now remember my intention was to light up the trees on approach but the real-world test showed I need to see the 25’ wide runway centerline marking.

Dale, If I were building one, knowing what I know now, I would put it someplace else, maybe in the nose or nose cover; I think Russ M did that. My EZ had the same thing with the incandescent bulb and I did fly it at night but that was years ago and my eyes were better. Hopefully changing to the spot light versions lights will be better. I worked on the panel lighting today.

No don’t have gear doors for the wheel but there is a fairing on the strut that fits in a recess to sort of seal the air leaks in the nose.

it might be a ton of work, but perhaps on the end of the wing where the winglet kind might be a good plan.

My apologies Del, I bought a hangar home in Texas. South of Tyler. (T25)

The one(s) I am 'working on' are a 100w COB mounted to a CPU fan heatsink with a focusing lens which will be mounted in the nose of my LH(&RH?) wheel pant(s) on an adjustable (fixed?gravity slung?) gimbal. The LED runs off 12vdc via a driver board and the fan is straight 12vdc. I will make a female mold of the nose of my wheel pant for forming the clear plexi 'nose bowl', which be attached to the nose of the wheel pant, after the glass nose is cut off. I had an idea to put a little servo run by a servo tester in the cockpit to adjust vertical, and if it were hanging, damped, on a CG bearinged mounted to the sides of the front of the wheel pant. Shown running at low amps, I cranked it up to 4A and it's ridiculously bright.

installing on the wheel pants has been discussed and accomplished. There are often trade-offs.  I heard there was return glare from the canard.

FYI, In the early 80s when I was still building, I saw someone's EZ, at Lakeland FL with a pair of landing lights that were attached to the proximal end of the nose gear strut.  Another EZ that I saw, had the landing light imbedded at an angle in the speed brake.  Never got to talk to the owners to ask about how well the lights worked.

When I fly at night, I use the landing light projecting forward so that others can see me. If your landing lights are on the nose gear strut or on the speed brake, are you going to deploy them at speed for recognition?

Wayne,
I was thinking the same thing.  Even during the day, it you wanted turn on those lights as a means of "recognition", the landing gear or speed brake would need to be deployed.
