Fuel filtration

Bill Allen

When I was looking into fuel systems and filtration I gathered the following info which might be of interest - if there’s anything to be added or edited, please let me know.
One thing I couldn't find was how to create the “mu” micron character on my IPad - that’s “um” with the “u” having a long tail on its left. If anyone can tell me how to find that, it would be another mystery solved….  :^)

WAM Diesel; Lister-Petter 252427 fuel filter 10um. This is a paper filter so not recommended for an SI engine.

Note; There are 3 methods of rating filters

  1. NMR. (Nominal Micron Rating)  This means a given filter will capture a given percentage of the stated size, typically, say, 90% at 10um

  2. AMR (Absolute Micron Rating) This is a single pass test through a sheet of the filtration medium to see what size particle will pass trough

  3. MPBR (Multi-Pass Beta Rating) Used by many manufacturers to identify and specify filters (but not in a public way)

New high pressure common-rail fuel injection systems require filtration at 95% an 3um

Filtration should de done on a descending manner; ie; coarsest filtering into finest, rather than fitting 10um filters throughout.

Most recognised test methods are SAE J905, SAE J1488, SAE J1839; see https://www.sae.org/standards/content/j905_200909

1 micron = 1 millionth of a meter

40-90 micron = dia of human hair

Bill,
I found out how to enter μ and other Greek letters on my iPhone. It should be similar to the iPad. Go the setup and under General>keyboards you can add new keyboards, one being Greek.
Once that is done a little world symbol shows up which toggles the Greek keyboard.
