Got some questions on Long EZ controls

David A Froble

Ok, spent a couple of hours reading the plans, and then looking at actual control linkage. Now asking for conformation.

What I got from the plans is that when moving the stick from side to side, there is 20 degrees travel in each direction. So, the canard control tube will be rotating with this movement. It appears that this rotation is allowed by the heim joints. Is this how it works?

Is there anything better than the phnolic blocks for holding and allowing rotation of the 3/4 inch tubing?

Didn't have time to read all the canard pusher newsletters ..

The hiem joints allow for the torque tube to be in 2 straight sections. For the phenolic blocks search the archives for iges bearings

Yes! Igus makes an excellent plastic bearing which is installed in my Cozy (and Burt’s Skigull). Get the Hi-tempersture version, there is less play in the system.

Everything I've found is metric. Tube is 3/4 inch OD. Do you have more info?

Hi Dave ,

Buy a digital vernier gauge is my info ;^)

You're nearly there,

(I used internally PVC coated thin ally shell plain bearings for my control run..)

Hello David,
See this link:

I had some with the red spherical ball, and the fit was more sloppy with those.
Here is a link to a video I made showing Igus slop (which is much better with the yellow spherical balls).

I had contacted Igus about the red iglide-R bearings. These were made by taking housings that had the standard iglide bearings (yellow) and popping out the original ball and putting the new one in. This seems to create the play that most people experience.

The play was unacceptable to me so I installed the bearings with the yellow balls.  They work perfectly so far (just 50 hrs).

I hope Igus changes their technique.

Send them an accurate tape measure, in inches, not metric ...

Hey Dave, you're a maths guy,

The roll control tube rotates about it's major axis - only.

What are you doing with all the ball stuff. Costs weight and $s.

Find 3/4" I.D. PTFE lined thin shell bearings flanged / plain

Burt's phenolic drilled blocks were sufficient but the PTFE is better, so why faff about?

Flox-in and move on.

Anyone challenging Burt's axiom, 'throw it up - if it comes down it's too heavy'?

I'm still flying 40 yr on with no 'slop' in the roll channel whatsoever.

What I'm working on now is not an EZ, and I was considering some "improvements". It's not going to work, so I'm reverting to the existing design.

But, I learned some new bits of information, and I feel that is always a good thing.

… except that …

Moving the stick from side to side, in order to rotate a control tube, would only effect the Canard in a plane like mine. A VariEze. Where Roll control was accomplished with the Canard.
(Of course, this has not been the case for a long time.)

But perhaps everyone noticed that right away …
