I purchased the uAvionix Echo from GRT and also purchased their Safefly 2020 GPS to mate with it. The advantage for buying the GRT GPS was that it was premounted to the Echo, prewired and provided an extra RS232C port for the future. At any rate, I installed it and it has worked perfectly in and out. (I'm currently using the wonderful iFly GPS App for in, but may switch to the free Airmate App.) I mounted the Echo unit on a sub panel I have in front of my main panel. The GPS antenna puck is curently on the left shoulder of my backrest. Because I wanted to get back to flying (to destroy my nosewheel fork) ASAP, I temporarily mounted the Echo stub antenna just in front of the rear passenger seat and used a 6 foot RG400 cable to connect it. Who needs a GIB, anyhow?

Upon first power up, while on the ground, I used the iphone App to set the transponder threshold until I could reliably get both the transponder code and the Baro Alt numbers. A PAPR was requested after the flight and it came back with zero errors. At some point when weather gets more comfortable for working on the plane, I will move the Echo stub antenna to under the belly at the NACA scoop which in my case is a formed aluminum (perfect groundplane) panel. Perfect location away from my regular transponder and DME antennas. However, this will require an 8 foot coax which will exceed the 1.5 Db loss, but a lower loss (than RG400) coax cable should remedy that.

I considered the more expensive Tailbeacon in the nose. I was worried that between the battery, the lead ballast, the nosewheel castings, and the aluminum adjustable brake setup that I have that there was too much stuff in the way to blanket the signals. So I went with the Echo.

My transponder antenna is under the front seat.  Those of you who have installed the Echo, where did you install the antenna? Internal? external?  Has to be at least 3 ft from the transponder antenna.

If you want to answer in a separate thread that is fine.
I considered the TailBeacon, but sounds like the ECHO is more my choice.

Why not install the Uavionix ECHO?  It’s Less expensive and provides both in and out! Gary Hertzler installed the ECHO in his Vari and can give yo the details.
