Hey Tom, we think alike - mine have been flying 22 years now.  Would like to go from halogen to LED bulbs but getting narrow beam (5-12 deg) in LED is difficult!!
Advantage of landing lights in the wingtips is getting around amongst others on the aprons and parking lots.  Steady or wig-wag....... works for me!

Photo IS the correct way up - if you live in the Southern Hemisphere anyway!!
