Re: Uavionix tailbeacon in VariEze
Steve
Thanks for all the input. I don’t hear anyone who has used the tail beacon.....yet. I have the Echo in my Defiant which is a great package paired with the GRT GPS. However it was a very difficult install particularly in getting the setup with my two EFIS screens. The Vari Eze doesn’t have an EFIS so the install should be simpler I would think. There is a good case for having both adsb out and in as you can hook up a phone or iPad to display the in data. But the Echo requires another antenna. My transponder antenna is under the front seat. Those of you who have installed the Echo, where did you install the antenna? Internal? external? Has to be at least 3 ft from the transponder antenna.

Thanks Don- I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have determined that the Uavionix ECHO with their GPS source is the best solution for me. I would be open to discussion of canard people who have any info to share on the Uavionix ECHO, good and bad. If you want to answer in a separate thread that is fine. I considered the TailBeacon, but sounds like the ECHO is more my choice. -Christian -- www.BrilliantDesignOnline.com Solidworks Design & CNC Plasma Cutting -a division of- www.AlpineWorldwide.com "We build ideas.."

Why not install the Uavionix ECHO? It’s Less expensive and provides both in and out! Gary Hertzler installed the ECHO in his Vari and can give yo the details.

I haven’t installed a Tailbeacon in my VariEze yet, but I did instal one in my C337G. It was straightforward (especially after I sent a faulty one back) and they were as helpful as I could want. The beacon can be turned off via their App, so if one wanted to instal it in the hellhole, or the nose, that would be possible. Only the test flight results from the FAA would determine if your installation works sufficiently well. Bill Allen VE N2CR LE N99BA CZ4 G-BYLZ

Cleveland Wheels & Brakes for sale
h2w@...
If anyone here needs wheels/brakes for a Long-Eze.
I have an unused Cleveland wheel and brake kit for sale. the wheels only were used for a short time in my garage to roll project around, never outside etc. Calipers and rotors were only used for a fit check, otherwise they have lived in their box. The kit is as received from Aircraft Spruce. I upgraded to Groves so these are no longer needed. They would work out well for a plans built Long-Eze. Currently this specific kit is $3,045 on AS&S. I bought this kit many years ago, and I'd recommend replacing the o-rings before use (these brakes calipers have never seen use and/or brake fluid, by calendar time they should be replaced).
AS&S link: link
I'm asking $1,500 (less than 50% of AS&S price) plus shipping. I'm located in the PNW (Seattle)

The ForeFlight flight plan goes to the Area 660 and the 660 sends steering commands to the autopilot. You should turn the Bluetooth off on the mini once the flight plan is in the 660 otherwise it does some strange things. I reported it to ForeFlight, but they didn’t seem interested in digging in to the problem. Don

Thanks for that Don!
I was thinking of getting a Garmin Aera because to use an AVmap you have to be Italian. It is a huge hassle to put a flight plan in it. Also the Trio doesn’t track the AVmap well as that GPS jumps around with the course display, and I think the NMEA output, even flying straight and level in smooth air.
I didn’t realize Foreflight would send course changes to an Aera; maybe only a 660.
Maybe worth the big bucks.

I have a Trio Pro, Aera 660 and the IPad mini. I do my flight plans with Forefight on the Mini, then send them to the 660 via Bluetooth. The Trio then flys the fight plan from the 660. This is how I got around the IPad not going direct to the Trio.

I would love it if my iPad would send the GPS data to my Trio. My AVmap GPS feeds the Trio but it is a huge hassle to change my flight plan in flight but with Foreflight it is easy.
The Foreflight people told me that Apple will not let them send NMEA data out from an iPad; probably because Apple thinks it is a legal liability.

You can not connect the two.
The Trio requires either a ARINC 429 (if its upgraded) or a NEMA (RS232) input for a GPS information. The iPad has neither output.

Re: Engine Mount Needed

Well, now that this conversation has come up regarding motor mounts, how do you tell the difference between an O235 mount for a Cozy and a O320 mount for the same cozy? I understand thru the grape vine that the Mount for the O320 is shorter than the mount for the O235. What do you measure to tell the difference and what should I be looking for? Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
