Re: Ipad mini panel mount

Much will depend on how much space you have.  I got lucky.  Behind the iPad is my glove box.  I mounted a hard shell case directly to the glove box door and I can still open the glove box.

I found right angle Lightning charge cable on Amazon that works nicely.  I’ve had no issues with overheating with no external cooling fans.

Re: Ipad mini panel mount

Hi Joe,
I didn't want to obscure or change anything of my existing instrument panel. (And absolutely not the idea of a loose iPad!)
Also the alphanumerics of the mini iPad are quite small so that, for me, it was better to mount it closer-to.

I mounted a RAM mount 'ball' onto the RAM iPad holder/mount (most extreme of the available two places). To this I fitted a ball-to-ball, 3" between centres, RAM arm.
I screwed a RAM 'ball' to the right top longeron, aft of the switch panel and almost level with my chest .

This gives me my mini iPad up close when I need it but leaves clear my total vision of my, unchanged, panel and total vision of my switch panel that sits up under the right hand longeron right above the stick.
A further point is that the articulated iPad can be swivelled away face to the fuselage wall for ingress/egress/parked without the iPad on obvious view.

I found that I didn't need a USB charger for shorter trips two to three hours but I have now mounted a twin USB charger/voltmeter in the pilot's seat back to the far right hand side clear of my back seat cushion (below my ignition switches). This requires only a short lead up to the iPad if needed.

Just what I did, OMV, I certainly didn't want my panel obscured or changed.

The echo GPS antenna has a magnetic base, so t put a small steel plate buy my right shoulder where shoulder harness attaches.  Works great!

You need to be careful putting antennas in or around the spar box as there is a firewall and engine on the othe side.  The firewall is a ground plane and will shield signals coming from, or going, aft of the aircraft.

Thanks for all the input.  I don’t hear anyone who has used the tail beacon.....yet.  I have the Echo in my Defiant which is a great package paired with the GRT GPS.  However it was a very difficult install particularly in getting the setup with my two EFIS screens.  The Vari Eze doesn’t have an EFIS so the install should be simpler I would think.  There is a good case for having both adsb out and in as you can hook up a phone or iPad to display the in data.  But the Echo requires another antenna. My transponder antenna is under the front seat.  Those of you who have installed the Echo, where did you install the antenna? Internal? external?  Has to be at least 3 ft from the transponder antenna.

Re: Uavionix tailbeacon in VariEze

I purchased the uAvionix Echo from GRT and also purchased their Safefly 2020 GPS to mate with it. The advantage for buying the GRT GPS was that it was premounted to the Echo, prewired and provided an extra RS232C port for the future. At any rate, I installed it and it has worked perfectly in and out. (I'm currently using the wonderful iFly GPS App for in, but may switch to the free Airmate App.) I mounted the Echo unit on a sub panel I have in front of my main panel. The GPS antenna puck is curently on the left shoulder of my backrest. Because I wanted to get back to flying (to destroy my nosewheel fork) ASAP, I temporarily mounted the Echo stub antenna just in front of the rear passenger seat and used a 6 foot RG400 cable to connect it. Who needs a GIB, anyhow?

Upon first power up, while on the ground, I used the iphone App to set the transponder threshold until I could reliably get both the transponder code and the Baro Alt numbers. A PAPR was requested after the flight and it came back with zero errors. At some point when weather gets more comfortable for working on the plane, I will move the Echo stub antenna to under the belly at the NACA scoop which in my case is a formed aluminum (perfect groundplane) panel. Perfect location away from my regular transponder and DME antennas. However, this will require an 8 foot coax which will exceed the 1.5 Db loss, but a lower loss (than RG400) coax cable should remedy that.

I considered the more expensive Tailbeacon in the nose. I was worried that between the battery, the lead ballast, the nosewheel castings, and the aluminum adjustable brake setup that I have that there was too much stuff in the way to blanket the signals. So I went with the Echo.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have determined that the Uavionix ECHO with
their GPS source is the best solution for me. I would be open to discussion of
canard people who have any info to share on the Uavionix ECHO, good and bad.
If you want to answer in a separate thread that is fine.
I considered the TailBeacon, but sounds like the ECHO is more my choice.

I spoke with tech support at Uavionic, they didn’t recommend using the trail beacon on a long ez stating it needed to have access to sky and ground views. The recommended the use of the echoUAV, I installed it on my long, easy to do.

I haven’t installed a Tailbeacon in my VariEze yet, but I did instal one in my C337G. It was straightforward (especially after I sent a faulty one back) and they were as helpful as I could want.
The beacon can be turned off via their App, so if one wanted to instal it in the hellhole, or the nose, that would be possible.
Only the test flight results from the FAA would determine if your installation works sufficiently well.

Steve,

On my VariEze, the Echo UAT antenna ground plane is installed in the hellhole, under the gear bow, with the TED ball-tip antenna protruding out through the fuselage just ahead of the cowl inlet. Ground plane is a scaled-up version of the RST octagonal plane (scaled to the 978 mHz UAT freq.) Works very well.
