Re: LED Landing light?

What's wrong with the plans landing light? It's plenty bright and fully adjustable for landing or taxi. I've used mine only for taxi since I don't land on unlighted runways at night. In fact I don't fly at night unless due to (my bad planning) it ends up that way. I have used it a few times during the day when on a long straight in to a tower airport and the tower says they don't see me yet. That works, especially since I have an auto turn signal unit wired into the three position toggle.

I've been working on a landing/taxi light for my VariEze, I took some photos of testing it the other day:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PftK5xT7sf2hTj1U9

The LEDs are several lengths of this stuff:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07PWVD357

Pros:
 - Extremely bright
 - No mechanisms required

 - Efficient, runs around 12W for that much light

Cons:
 - Light not focused, so lots of spillover and possibly blinding folks on the ground
 - Needs 24V (solved this one as I made a 12V to 24V converter)

Haven't flown it yet, but I'll let you know when I do. My plan is to seal & attach it to the front of the strut with some electronics-grade silicone (Momentive RTV5818) to allow it to flex, along with some clear wing tape for secondary retention.

On my long,

I epoxied a piece of small aluminum tubing from the underside of each side of my canopy. They meet in the middle just forward of my chest. This is where I mounted my Garmin GPS.  When the canopy is open, it’s out of the way.

Might work for the mini too.  Soon I will know because I will be in the same situation as you. Where the GPS is mounted, I can over look it to view the rest of the panel.

Hi Joe,
I didn't want to obscure or change anything of my existing instrument panel. (And absolutely not the idea of a loose iPad!)
Also the alphanumerics of the mini iPad are quite small so that, for me, it was better to mount it closer-to.

I mounted a RAM mount 'ball' onto the RAM iPad holder/mount (most extreme of the available two places). To this I fitted a ball-to-ball, 3" between centres, RAM arm.
I screwed a RAM 'ball' to the right top longeron, aft of the switch panel and almost level with my chest .

This gives me my mini iPad up close when I need it but leaves clear my total vision of my, unchanged, panel and total vision of my switch panel that sits up under the right hand longeron right above the stick.
A further point is that the articulated iPad can be swivelled away face to the fuselage wall for ingress/egress/parked without the iPad on obvious view.

I found that I didn't need a USB charger for shorter trips two to three hours but I have now mounted a twin USB charger/voltmeter in the pilot's seat back to the far right hand side clear of my back seat cushion (below my ignition switches). This requires only a short lead up to the iPad if needed.

Just what I did, OMV, I certainly didn't want my panel obscured or changed.

Re: Ipad mini panel mount

iPad panel mounts that are recessed i to the panel are problematic because of the rapid pace of technology updating. If you just do a RAM ball mount on the panel with a charging cable, then you can mount whatever you want to that ball mount. So of they come out with a better iPad, Or you smash the one you have three years from now and can’t get a replacement for that specific model, your not stuck having to recut the IP.

About five years ago I promised my EZ a landing light for Christmas. Well, I've got some time on my hands now, does anyone have suggestions?

-I would prefer to minimize any composite work, so a bolt-on would be nice.

-I can put one in the forward access hatch but I'm concerned that it won't give good depth perception, does that work?

- I'm pretty good with metal work & have a full welding & machine shop

Sunspot LED is the same size as a typical certified one so it’s a direct replacement for the plans design light.

Any light will be plenty. Landing without a landing light altogether is not that challenging or dangerous since runway lights typically light up plenty IMHO.

Taxi light? Open the canopy and hold a strong flashlight.

If you have a manual hand primer pump, make sure it is locked close

If the engine is running ROUGH it is not usually a vacuum leak at the carb seal. A vacuum leak tends add RPM to the engine and a slight leaning of fuel unless it is at one of the intake tube swedged tubes or the sump or gaskets.  Turn off each ignition system and see if the problem follows either the Magneto or the EI system. If it remains, you have at least eliminated the ignitions. This is a long shot, however, you may want to pull the oil screen or filter and look for cam particles. A warn lobe on a cam will cause this issue as well. If there is no lobe wear then I would do a compression check and verify that I have good compression and my valves are not sticking open or leaking. A compressed lifter body will also cause this issues. If the Ignition is good and the Cam is not warn and the compression is good with no valve leakage and the lifters are fully operational you need to take a closer look at the fuel flow delivery system. The carb could have a partially blocked idle jet. Sometimes when you get things overhauled mistakes can be made. Never discount the fact that the carburetor could have a partial blockage in the idle jet port or jet itself. Just have to ask this QUESTION: with your 10:1 pistons, you are running at least 100LL, not Auto-gas?

Re: Ipad mini panel mount

Can you post a photo of your setup? I mounted my mini directly to the panel and , as you said, the characters are just a tad too small.
